単行本!ゲットだぜ!

After over a month of sitting on an order, it finally got shipped and arrived today!

Even though we scanlate this manga, and managed to do something no scanlator has done before, we have to buy our own copies too you know. Though it was my own fault for short-cutting and getting it from YesAsia, not expecting it to be delayed this long. (Don’t order there.)

Anyways, there’s more needed to be said after the break if you are interested, which I hope you are…!

tl;dr – Houkago Play is ending, we need a new manga, there’s a list you can choose from, or recommend your own in the comments, tell your “friends”, also leave any scanlation-related questions if you have some.

With Houkago Play slowly winding down with the end of Volume 3, we’re going to need another series to pick up. I have been informed by a Japanese reader that apparently there exists a “Houkago Play R” that is set to come out this month, so this is on a list of potential projects. Also on that list is the prequel manga to the anime Rinne no Lagrange called “Akatsuki no Memoria” which I have expressed that we have interest in in a few threads on /a/. [1] [2]

That’s not all though, we also have a giant list of manga taken from you all, on /a/, of various manga they want to see scanalated. That’s how we choose Don’t Cry Girl. (You’ll need to click it to see it in full, if you want to take a peek.)

So at this time I ask you, the fans of manga, to ponder what we should do next. You can choose from the list of above/recommend before, or you can suggest more. Unfortunately even though we would like to do all of them, it is seemingly infeasible at this time.

If you do decide to submit your own series for consideration, please, include a Mangaupdates link if possible, and if it’s seemingly easy to get raws. We take everything into consideration. The ones most said/voted for obviously are closer to the top than most, that’s how it goes. We do buy our own raws, but admittedly even I try to avoid that if possible.

Also, since I’m leaving comments open for once, and don’t really expect much response, you can ask any scanlation-related questions in the comments too. I will try to answer them if I can.

Thanks for reading once again, if you did!

Oh, if you follow/followed KS+, which got renamed to “Love Despite”, they opened a forum where you can bug everyone for more information. [Here]

  1. Unpopular-Tan seems to be arriving at alot of peoples homes this month.

Shot in the dark seeing how this isn’t listed and has a group already, but they are so slow and I need my fix.

  2. I know you said don’t order from YesAsia, but after seeing this post I was inspired to go buy my own copy…and I went to YesAsia. Don’t really know any other site for getting it.

  3. General question:
I am a new translator and want to translate an ongoing manga that no group does, and need someone to clean and typeset is. Do I just email random scanlation groups until someone aggrees to help out?

Because I did a few oneshots for some random groups and they always wanted me translate some more of their stuff, but nobody agreed to help me with mine.

    • Emailing is a decent way of communicating, even better if they have a IRC channel to hop into. Doing it ‘random’ is generally fine, but the trick is that many of the larger groups will probably reject you, or just ignore you completely. Many will do as you’ve experienced, ask you to do stuff for them in exchange.

I personally say stick closer to smaller groups, as well as look around to find any that are generally interested in what you have to bring. A exact case situation to yours is WCW_TL working with kyonkundenwa. Latter translates, former does the rest.

  4. Oh God, please do Yume Tsukai. It is supposed to be 6 volumes, but only 3 are translated. And these three volumes alone make up to be one of the best stories ever made. I mean, damn, eldricht abominations, traps, transforming bodies and the art of the MGX guy? MGX sucks lately, I know, but his art is fucking superb when given free reign. And Yume Tsukai is something like…. 24/7 dream sequences from MGX, but with more cthulhu. Shit’s cash, etc.

    • I haven’t looked into Yume Tsukai before, but the premise looks pretty interesting. If we manage to find raws for it somewhere, it’s certainly a possibility. Also, that volume in the mediafire link is the only one in the series right?

      • Well, it’s the only volume of this Abenobashi manga that I’ve been able to find. I think there are no other volumes from this series ever printed, but my japanese and my skills in finding such stuff are poor enough for me to be horribly wrong about this. The other Abenobashi manga is already translated, but I stumbled upon this volume by chance in /a/ a few months ago… and, well, the art style is clearly superior to the other manga. This is why I tend to link it to every scanlator that feels without enough work on his hands :)

Ah, and thanks about Yume Tsukai! I will really be grateful if you do find raws and decide to do it!

    • The raws look fine to me, but our cleaner and typesetter have to approve of them too, since I can work with most raws so long as the kanji are visible.

    • Considering that there’s only two volumes left, it might be possible to do quickly and then pick up something else too. And since there’s raws online, we shouldn’t have too much of a problem with that either.

  5. What Tomoko said.

I WOULD say “Steal Choku! from whoever it is SUPPOSEDLY doing that because they’re amazingly, unbelievably slow” but… I think that’s against The Scanlators’ Code or something.

    • Oh you mean Maigo? Ohoho.
There’s no such thing as “Scanlators’ Code”, because chivalry is dead. It’s all about making that scanlation money nowadays, or so I’ve been told. I hate it when groups do that, so taking a series in that fashion would make me hate myself more than usual.

      • But surely taking it *away* from such a group and the clutches of said actions would be something you could feel good about, right?

So maybe you should. Hint hint. I mean, the whole thing’s finished already. And you should. You’d be doing the world a favour.

        • To be honest, I personally don’t have any qualms about stealing series from other groups, but then again, I don’t really care too much about the scanlation scene as a whole, I just like translating what I like. Regardless, I still have to take into consideration the wishes of the rest of the group.

  7. Well, from the list, the only one that caught my eye was Shinigami-sama ni Saigo no Onegai wo. When the group that was translating it dropped it at a quite a cliffhanger on the story, I had to fight the urge to look for the raws and see what happened, but as the dialog is really important, I had to resign myself to ask some other groups to pick it up, with no results.

Another series I’d like to recommend is Iincho!, by Akikaze Shirakumo (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=29535) There are two well-scanned volumes already available (http://www.jcafe24.net/index.php/topic,24061.msg561487.html#msg561487) and two other volumes printed (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/search3.html?q=Shirakumo+Akikaze+&media=&r=any&step=20&order=score) And as the series name suggest, the story revolves around the 6 Iinchos (class representatives,) at their fist year of middle school. They come from different elementary schools, have quite different personalities, and have to live their life with the constant (sexual) harassment of the student council’s president. More detailed synopsis here (http://zepy.momotato.com/2007/10/19/manga-iin-cho/)

I hope you pick the up!

    • I was hoping to get around to Shinigami-sama ni Saigo no Onegai wo myself at some point, so it’s possible we might do that, but there’s dozens of things people want us to pick up, or we want to pick up ourselves(mostly me). As for Iincho, the premise looks really nice, and there’s raws already, which is always a plus. Can’t say anything for sure though, but we’ll see.

    • Ahh, yeah. Moyashimon. We thought about that heavily at the very beginning, but we ultimately did not go forward with that just by the sheer volume of it. (10+ volumes, aha.) Same kinda thing applies to Hyouge Mono, seeing as it has even more volumes. The show is fun though.

As for HS, are you the one that’s posted various pages on /a/? Since I’ve been curious what the text density of that is. imagine it being comprised of all relatively short one-off skits/chapters.

  8. Either the Rinne no Lagrange prequel or, from the list, Deus X Machina.
Or God Does Not Play Dice (if no one else is doing it, I don’t even know).

    • Deus X Machina has Riceballicious on it, albeit they release slowly due to lack of staff. Or God Does Not Play Dice has been dead for almost two years, ahh. And we have the first chapter of the Lagrange prequel, and the tank is out. Might get it, again, still thinking about it.

As stated in those Lagrange threads, we’re probably going to need another cleaner if we end up doing that one specifically.

  9. I know next to nothing about how scanlations work (I do know that I’m very happy to have stumbled upon this one, though!) and I don’t expect you to teach a class about it as you are quite busy, but am I right in guessing that it’s basically that one (or more) of you buys a manga at a shop/online that’s printed in Japanese, translates the text with your own brain (and occasional help from others/dictionaries/internet) carefully scans it in, uses an image-manipulating computer program to white the Japanese text in, replaces it with English text, and then uploads the edited scans to your site after which other sites host the scans for the public to read, then encourage the public to support the original work by buying it (when it comes out in English)?

    • For the most part that is correct, yeah. The only real caveat is cost of it all, which greatly depends on how you operate.

A lot of groups do in fact have designated people that go out to buy magazines to scan them in, others do the same but with volumes/tankoubons, but a majority of people do end up using raws gotten off Japanese P2P like Share/Winny/Perfect Dark and just work from there. (We are somewhat of a combination of the two.)

The website you operate off of is also a unnecessary cost, but can benefit you if you decide to put in the money. (This is how we have a online reader.) While we use a owned server and pay the bills, one can easily operate just as fine under a WordPress or Blogger blog. Everything else, like how you translate or clean the page, is all up to how you personally do things. (We all use Photoshop here.)
